“I do core lab chemistry, hematology and transfusion medicine. You can find a lot of things in blood. We ensure we have accurate results for the physicians to diagnose patients – we can run up to 800 tests a day here.”

“I went to Douglas College and took a microbiology course which included a lab portion and I was so intrigued. It’s like solving a puzzle: there are so many plates and media you can use to grow different bacteria. Bacteria can give off gas or turn colours: that’s so fascinating to me.

That put me on this path. I went to British Columbia Institute of Technology to become a medical laboratory technologist, and got hired at Ridge Meadows Hospital during my phlebotomy practicum, and became a medical lab assistant. After I graduated, I became a medical lab technologist.

Now I do core lab chemistry, hematology and transfusion medicine. You can find a lot of things in blood. It’s pretty cool. We double and triple check everything. We maintain, troubleshoot and run quality control everyday on our analyzers and with manual tests to ensure we have accurate results for the physicians to diagnose patients – we can run up to 800 tests a day here!

In my free time, I like to visit the lake to see what I can catch with my fishing rod. Being able to catch something is really rewarding.”
